about

Boomkat Review:

'A Shifting Dynamic of Colour' is not the first album that has attempted to marry audio and visual sensibilities, but it's certainly one of the nicest we've heard in recent months. Newcomer Richard Ginns sets out to create music which reflects on the work of minimalists Mark Rothko and Hiroshi Sugimoto, and in many ways succeeds. Ginns (along with collaborator and label boss Alexander Wendt) takes his time over each composition, and allows each note, each distinct sound, the time it needs to breathe. This almost zen-like quality is what sets 'A Shifting Dynamic of Colour' apart from many contemporary productions, and while many of his peers tend to focus on an almost cloying emphasis on pretty textures, Ginns proceeds with an admirably unsentimental resolve. This music is deep, and vaguely melancholy but the teary dramatics are thankfully kept at bay. Impeccably produced and bound to attract the attention of fans of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's genre-bending collaborations, 'A Shifting Dynamic of Colour' comes highly recommended.
